Review – Shawn Hook, EP: My Side of Your Story
Release Date: June 16, 2017
Juno nominated pop artist, Shawn Hook has released a four song EP entitled My Side of Your Story on June 16. Although the EP is shorter than most would like, it is quality over quantity. I honestly loved each song on the release.
“Good Days” starts off the journey into My Side of Your Story. It’s an upbeat track that could easily fit into your summer playlist. In a video posted to Shawn’s Facebook page, he says this song is about “remembering when times were good, and trying to get to that moment”.
The second song on the EP is his current single, “Reminding Me” which features Vanessa Hudgens. It’s easy to see why this song was chosen as the single, as it instantly pulls the listener in with the harmonies between the two insanely talented artists.
Next up, we have “Never Let Me Let You Go”, which Shawn says is basically about trying to get over a relationship, but not allowing yourself to do so. The lyrics really get to the point on this one stating “Why can’t you just let this heartbreak kick in? – Rule number one, we can’t still be friends, – no late night phone calls, – no how have you been’s, – I’ve seen that movie I know how it ends.” It is definitely one of those songs that will be stuck in your head for days after you’ve heard it, and it’s not necessarily a bad thing.
Last but not least, we have “Dancing in the Sky” which was co-written with OneRepublic lead singer, Ryan Tedder. The lyrics in this song really spoke to me, and at points literally gave me goose bumps. It is about talking to your significant other about recalling memories from the past when you are old and grey. “Remember the times when we were dancing in the sky together, when we were laughing at the stormy weather…”
I completely enjoyed this EP and it has made me anxious for Shawn to release a new full length in the future!
